Slipknot returned this year with We Are Not Your Kind and it's a powerful, exhilarating record. After an intense introduction track we are launched into 'Unsainted', the first single from the album and also, the first time the band has ever used a choir. Since hearing this first single I knew we were in for the usual unpredictable approach from Slipknot. The album offers blasting face-melters such as 'Red Flag' and also 'Nero Forte', in which Corey switches between agonising screams and impressive, clean vocals. Corey's clean vocals are also used in the haunting 'Liars Funeral'. An introduction reminiscent of 2008's Snuff, leads us into an aggressive masterpiece that I suspect is directed at Chris Fehn who had sued his ex-bandmates earlier this year. 'Spiders' is possibly the most striking track on the album with it's haunting lyrics and 7/8 time signature. 'Orphan' follows with an excellent drum track due to Jay Weinberg's increased contribution to the writing of the album (along with Jim Root and Shawn Crahan). The album is closed with 'Solway Firth', the second single from the record. It begins with Corey's eerie, blues-inspired, singing that leads us into what I consider the strongest track of the album. Unfortunately, 'All Out Life' was not included on the album (except the Japanese edition) which is slightly disappointing however, this album is a classic Slipknot masterpiece with the band pushing boundaries as they always do.
