If you haven’t heard of Esperanza Spalding before, I highly suggest you go and check her out. She’s renowned for her impeccable vocal ability and her jazz bass background and both are expertly exhibited on her most recent album, ‘Emily’s D+Evolution’.
The album is an absolute masterpiece of pop-fused jazz funk with impressive poetic lyrics passing through a set of the best vocal chords i’ve ever listened to.
The album explores and tackles a number of taboos such as gender roles, good and evil and the destruction that it can cause.
The polyphonic melodies and syncopated rhythms are just mind blowing. The unity of the funk bass and psychedelic post-punk guitar on tracks such as ‘Good Lava’ and ‘Earth to Heaven’ is just one example of the incredible creativity that has gone into this album.
There isn’t much more I can say on the album to actually do it justice. I can’t put into words how amazing it is. Just go and listen and have your life changed.
