So, the London-based, 5-piece have finally released and album and it is a genre-defying, creative masterpiece.

We are welcomed into the album through laid-back groover ‘Space is the Place’ which leads us into ‘Why You Mad?’. In this second track we are exposed to drummer (and bandleader) Femi Koleoso’s insane talent and passion as he plays his intricate patterns at approx. 160bpm. ‘Red Whine’ follows as a jazz-fusion track that salutes UB40 in both track name and also its syncopated, ska rhythm. Later in the album we are treated to gems such as salsa bouncer ‘Sao Paulo’, ethereal piano piece ‘Philosopher II’ and the polyrhythmic, afrobeat roller ‘Shakara’ upon which the great Kokoroko feature. Further features include Loyle Carner on the subdued hip-hop track ‘What Am I to Do?’ and pop queen Jorja Smith features on ‘Reason and Disguise’. You Can’t Steal My Joy is a magnificent album that is impossible to pigeon hole. Where the jazz influence is obvious, this is much more than just a jazz record. The diverse instrumentalism and eclecticism of styles is phenomenal and the band members seem to meander between genres effortlessly.
