MGMT - MGMT

MGMT’s self-titled third album is a cool, hypnotising one with mind-bending production and though it may fail to match the huge electro-pop debut, Oracular Spectacular, it’s by far, their most experimental and interesting album yet. ‘Alien Days’, the first single of the album, is a laid-back yet exciting opener that sounds like what David Bowie’s Space Oddity may sound like when on speed and 'Cool Song No. 2’ follows to explode into a psychedelic masterpiece, fluctuating between big bass lines to lighthearted, almost childlike bridges.

Distorted, Hip hop-esque drums can be heard throughout the album and they compliment the huge, atmospheric track number 3 'Mystery Disease’ which wouldn’t sound out of place on Radiohead’s 'The King of Limbs’. A cover of Faine Jade’s 'Introspection’ is a beautifully crafted, easy-listener with guitar effects and syncopation forcing a dance out of you. The second single 'Your Life Is A Lie’ is short, sweet and catchy just before we delve into the flood of melancholy synth-infested sonic space of 'A Good Sadness’ and 'An Orphan of Fortune’. The ethereal 'I Love You Too, Death’ is followed by a much more buoyant electro-prance 'Plenty of Girls in the Sea’ with a bass line reminiscent of The Coral’s 'Dreaming of You’. This album might not please the hipster’s who only want another song like 'Kids’ for them to overplay, but nevertheless, it is an intriguing, captivating record with impeccable production. Where people may complain they won’t be getting their fill of funky electro-pop tunes to be annihilated by radio plays, it feels to me that MGMT are maturing in their sound and I’m excited to see where this river of psychedelia takes us.
